OHS work on cable lines
OHS work on cable lines

The cost of running the power cable line is higher than in the case of overhead lines, but they are used more often due to greater operational safety. Of course, the principles of occupational health and safety, which should be applied, also apply here.

General rules for the safety of work on cable lines

The basis is the fastest repair or replacement of damaged fragments of the cable line as soon as possible. Each employees of employees should be equipped with a first aid kit and certified equipment, such as earthings, voltage indicators, protective helmets, links, etc. They are necessary during repairs, as well as devices such as a cable lift for safe line laying. Only a few work on cable lines can be performed by one person: they include inspection, control and maintenance of the lower parts of the support structures as well as replacement and completion of warning and information boards.

Particular care should be taken when working with high support constructions. During repairs, other employees should never be located directly under the structure. All tools must be lowered and served using a transport kit, and if these are small items, you should use transport bags. After completing the work, you must always make sure that there are no tools on the spot. If the height of the structure is above 2 m, for safety it is necessary to use braces with a rope or braces with a iliac belt and protective helmets.

At least two employees need to participate in some works. These include welding works, gas and electrical cutting or other works related to fire risk and explosion. One should not work alone if the installation is under voltage and at a height of over 2 m. At least two employees must do works in channels, tunnels, cable wells and rooms connected to them. Particular caution and a minimum of two teams also require lines that have been excluded from the power supply, but cross with lines under voltage.

Safe work on removing damage to cable lines

Damage to cable lines can largely avoid, already at the stacking stage, for which equipment such as a lift or cable stand is used. However, failures cannot be avoided, because no material is completely resistant to depleting and damage. Before removing damage to the cable line, the basis is of course to make sure that the line is not voltage. After removing the grounding, the line should always be treated as voltage.

Rules of safe inspection of cable lines

Cable lines are necessary to detect any damage in time and perform repair or replacement before the problem becomes even more serious. When examining, however, you also need to follow the safety rules, such as:

  • Prohibition of entering support constructions and poles.
  • The need to check the insulators and cable fasteners before touching the pole.
  • After noticing the fault, you should immediately report.
  • If there is a direct threat, bystanders should be warned immediately.

The examination schedule depends on the voltage of the cable line, the material from which the insulation or the manufacturer's recommendations was made. The basic parameters to be checked include primarily: measuring the resistance of veins, measuring resistance measurement, insulation voltage test or checking the oil pressure control system.

Particular caution is required by inspection on lines near roads, railway tracks, water reservoirs and other communication routes. This requires informing the management of these roads and securing works. Precautions must also be used if bystanders have access to the workplace. Protective barriers with warning inscriptions should be placed around the excavation, and at night also mark this place with red lights. Handrails may not be less than 1 meter from the edge of the excavation, and their height should not be less than 1.1 m. If the visual inspection is carried out, e.g. at the workplace, safe routes for traffic and pedestrian traffic should be determined.

Preparation also requires inspection of lines run by cable tunnels. Open a minimum of 2 hatches for at least 30 minutes to ensure the access of fresh air before entering.

An additional threat is work using a hot cable pickle. All robots, such as mixing, transfer or temperature measurement, should be performed in glasses and protective gloves. The fire protection should also be implemented, the position must be located in class B fire extinguisher and festive firefighter blanket.

Cable lines are extremely safe, but this does not change the fact that they should be carried out regularly and be careful during failures and replacement of damaged elements.
